Cycling at speed in the city's shopping centre is putting pedestrians at risk, according to Douglas Council.
Douglas Council and the police are reminding the public that there are plenty of places in the capital to go cycling but that doesn’t include the main pedestrianised shopping streets.
It follows a number of complaints about people cycling in a reckless and dangerous manner in Strand Street, Castle Street and Duke Street which is not permitted and also contravenes byelaws, which could lead to a fine of up to £2,500.
Douglas City Centre Manager, Oliver Cheshire said: “There are so many other areas to cycle in and around Douglas and we would encourage people to do so in a careful and considerate manner.”
Police Inspector Chas Maloney added: “We have witnessed, first-hand, cycling through the main shopping centre, some of it is quite reckless and dangerous, which makes some pedestrians feel unsafe.
“Those responsible are a small minority of individuals, who act in an irresponsible manner and put themselves and pedestrians in the area at risk, some of whom are less able and/or visually impaired. Therefore, we would ask cyclists to dismount and walk with their bicycles through all pedestrian zones.”
