Police investigating cryptocurrency fraud

Wed, 28 Apr 2021

Police are warning people about crypto currencies after a resident lost money to a fraudster.

Officers are currently investigating a fraud whereby a resident utilised an exchange website to buy bitcoin; unfortunately the vendor took the money and failed to deliver.

A force spokesperson said: "If you are considering buying crypto currencies please carefully research the exchange and wallet provider you chose; there are many reputable and safe companies working in this sector but sadly some disreputable ones as well."

"A good tip would be to only use an exchange that requires you to prove who you are as they will also have identification for the other party should they prove to be dishonest."

"Buying directly from an individual carries even greater risk; do not transfer any money unless you are satisfied that the vendor is genuine."
